1998 Jimmy Stewart Relay Marathon - Rocket Scientists

The ERC sponsored a JPL team which participated in the th Annual Jimmy Stewart Relay Marathon on April 19, 1998 at Griffith Park. The team was composed of five team members, who each ran a 5.24 mile loop for a total distance of 26.2 miles - equivalent to a full marathon. The course was mostly on asphalt roads and generally flat, with a few hills. But true to form in Southern California, the weather was very warm!

The ERC furnished a "JPL" banner. They also provided t-shirts that proclaimed, "Actually, I Am A Rocket Scientist", which were worn by the team during the race (despite the 90 degree temperature).

The team was organized and managed by Susan Merrill.

This year's team members (in running order) were:

  • Bill Read
  • Ramon Garcia
  • William Mathews
  • Paul Herrera
  • Mark Ryne

The team time was an outstanding 03:13:34 for a 7:23 pace. The team finished 101st overall out of about 750 teams and 5th in the University/College Mens division. We were too busy having fun to keep track of each runners leg time. Special recognition goes to Bill Read who finished the first leg in 5th place to vault the JPL team into contention.

Several other JPL'ers also ran on other teams such as the "Los Feliz Flyers" and the "L. A. Leggers". They included:

  • Lloyd Deforrest
  • Caroline Racho
  • Steve Scandore

You're on our list for a JPL team next year. :)

If you are interested in participating on a JPL team for 1999, please send email to Susan Merrill.
