The Great Pumpkin Run is a race that was run on or near Halloween starting in the late 1970s. It often involved runners in costume and/or carrying a pumpkin. Initially it was a 5K race at the Rose Bowl. Later it became a variable-distance race featuring a moving turnaround point marked by a plastic pumpkin carried by successive runners back toward the finish line. A later incarnation had teams of runners carrying real (mini-)pumpkins up and down the El Prieto Trail.
