42nd Annual Running of the ARROYO SECO FREAKO

JPL Runners home

A total of 61 runners and walkers (48 men and 13 women) showed up on an almost perfect day to run in the 42nd Annual Arroyo Seco Freako Microthon (Charles Voge Memorial Run) on March 31st, 2016 (to avoid the RDO on the traditional April 1st date). Weather for this year's race was beautifully sunny, with race time temperature around 70 degrees. The weather and the construction work in the East Lot that created a slightly shorter course through what used to be the parking lot bought out the fastest times this configuration/route of the race has seen.

The race was won by Christopher Chatellier in a time of 19:42. Christopher was the first person to run under 20 minutes on this current course. He was followed by second place finisher Gabriele Vajente almost a minute later with a time of 20:40, and last year's third place winner Craig Stringham again coming in 3rd, with an improvement of his time to 20:46 (almost a minute off of his time from 2015).

The first woman runner to finish, Amanda Steffy, came in 6th place with a blazing fast time of 21:39 (that time would have been 3rd overall last year). Last year's women's winner Andrea Stringham was the second fastest women racer in a time of 25:16 (a slight improvement from her time last year) for an overall finish of 15th.

Congratulations go to out to all of the participants (race photos will be posted soon, or no later than the next RDO (ie April 29th)). This was again very large turnout for a non-anniversary year. We also had several close finishes, which made the race very exciting to watch.

With so many runners and many close finishes, it was important to have a good crew of volunteers at the finish line. The finish crew accurately recorded finish times for all 60 participants who crossed the finish line (one runner went back on lab at the East gate). A huge thanks to Sam Dolinar for marking the course (and un-marking the course) as well as for calling out the finishing times. Melora Larson was overall race Director and took pictures at the start and of most of the finishers (we had some camera memory issues this year). Andre Hughes took pictures at about the mid-point. The finish line helpers included Feiming Morgan, Mike Cheng, John May, and Anne Vyhnalek. All in all, it was a top-notch performance by a top-notch start/finish crew. Thanks!

I will let the Club know when the race pictures get posted.
