Subject: JPL Running Club - Arroyo Seco Freako 5km Race

The JPL Running Club is holding it's annual Arroyo Seco Freako
Microthon (Charles Voge Memorial) 5 km cross country race at noon on Tuesday, April 1, 2003 (one week from next Tuesday). This race has
been held continuously for the last 29 years and is also the most
heavily attended Running Club event conducted here at the lab.

The race will follow the "traditional" course - a single loop around
Hahamongna Park (formerly known as Oak Grove or Devils Gate Park).
It is run on pavement and trails and is well marked, so this is a
good opportunity for you recovering LA Marathoners to do a short
run on a soft surface. COLD drinks are provided for all participants.

To get to the start, exit the JPL Main Gate and turn left at the
Foothill Blvd signal. Follow the road around and then turn left
into lower Hahamongna Park (down the hill). At the "Y", take the right branch to the parking lot near the baseball diamonds.

Alternately, you can exit the South Gate (by the credit union) and
take an immediate left onto the bridal trial. Turn right at the "T"
intersection then follow the paved road past the Forest Service station.
Continue on the road and bare left at the "Y" (don't go uphill). Look
for the start in the lower parking lot near the baseball diamonds on
your right.

It takes about 10 minutes to get to the start area if you walk. Please
try to get there by 11:45 am.

Race director Rich Benson's Duck Call will start race at Noon sharp. Please RSVP to mark.ryne@jpl.nasas.gov so we can bring enough drinks for everyone.

I couldn't find any race results for 2003. The best evidence I have that this
race actually took place is this post-race email exchange inquiring about one particular runner who was "at this year's Freako".--note added by Sam)

Hi Sam,

Hi Mark,

I want to reach one of our runners who often shows up at Club races. He was at this year's Freako and also ran in last year's Smog Jog. He's in the blue shirt in the attached picture with Thierry, Ron and Feiming. I think his first name is Jim. Do you know his full name?

Thanks,
-Sam

His name is Jim Weiler (3-6814).

Mark,
